Science Report, Literature Circles and Home Reading Due: Friday 30th November
SCIENCE REPORT
We have worked hard in class to write up our science reports for our most recent experiment about carbon dioxide and the candle flame in the STEM room. Lots of people were able to complete the writing (following the correct structure) at school. For those who did not quite get finished, you need to have the report finished and ready to hand to Miss Augello at your next STEM session. For 5K, this means on Monday 26th November, for 5T it needs to be finished by Thursday 29th November. You are all getting very good at writing them.
LITERATURE CIRCLES
Continue reading to the end of your book. Well done to everyone for getting into some really deep discussions today which were studeent led. It was great to hear your feedback of how people cooperated with this task. When reading this week, remember to complete a role in your Homework book so that you have some ideas to contribute to your group discussion on Friday. Enjoy!

The Pitch Multimedia Presentation Due: Tuesday 13th November
We are impressed with the range and quality of passion projects that the students are choosing to work on this term. Each student has had a conference with their teacher to ensure their project will be a powerful one and one that they can learn a lot about and make a difference to themselves or others. At school everybody has completed a planning sheet and has had class time to begin their multimedia presentation. One of your tasks this week is to finish your multimedia presentation at home, using your iPad.
Remember that your presentation must be between 2 and 3 minutes (not shorter, no longer). There are a couple of documents to help you. On Google Classroom you will find an example video about 'Happiness' that we watched in class, in case you need a few ideas. You will also find the important rubric on Google Classroom. Try and aim for everything in the '2 points' column. If you follow this carefully, you have the opportunity to get full marks for your presentation. You will be sharing your presentation on the big screen with your own grade next week. We would like to start sharing these on Tuesday 13th November, so work hard to get this finished. Your presentation is like your advertisement to tell the rest of the grade what you will be exploring - make it interesting for your audience!
Literature Circles, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 18th November

Genius Hour Planning, Literature Circles, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 2nd November
GENIUS HOUR PLANNING
This week we have been brainstorming some ideas for our Genius Hour projects. We have used an A3 sheet of paper for this. Our task is to finish our brainstorming, then write a reflection for this week. Everyone has had class time for this and most have to just finish it off for homework.
Requirements for the A3 brainstorm sheet:
1. You must have 3 topic ideas. Try to have a 'big' question too, although you may not have thought of this yet (your teacher can guide you with this later).
2. Each topic must have 6-8 'mini' questions (smaller questions that you would need to research to help you answer your big question).
3. Each topic must have at least one primary source listed.
4. Each topic must include how you think your project may contribute to society (Who might benefit from what you find out and how?)
5. Take a photo of your brainstorm sheet (both sides) and save it into your 'Inquiry' folder in your Google Portfolio.
Requirements for your Reflection:
Answer the 3 questions as set up in your Google Portfolio today:
1. What have I achieved this week? (What have you done and which topic appeals to you most and why?)
2. What challenges have I faced this week and how have I overcome them?
3. My plan for next week is...
LITERATURE CIRCLES
You may now read to the end of your Literature Circles book. We know there are some eager readers who can't wait to find out how the story ends! Remember to complete your role in your Homework book so that you have some ideas to contribute to your group discussion on Friday.

Discussion, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 12th October
DISCUSSION
This term we will be starting our Genius Hour investigations. There is lots of planning that occurs here at school to discover what makes a great project before we actually begin on our individual projects. Our first part of the process is to focus on how we learn and what makes learning easy and what to do when we get stuck. For homework we would like you to interview one of your parents. Ask them the following questions:What is something you have learned recently? How did you go about learning? Why did you want/need to learn that thing? What helped you to learn? What made it difficult?
You may like to ask more questions about how mum and dad learn. To show what you have discussed, write a brief summary in your homework book. You may like to write a paragraph with full sentences, or list the question and record dot point answers. It is up to you.

Division, Literature Circles, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 7th September
DIVISION - MATHS
In Maths we have been learning about division. We have used real-life worded problems to show how we would use division and have solved problems that sometimes include remainders. For some situations, a remainder would be better shown as 'R4', meaning 'Remainder of 4'. This would be the case in working out how many bunches of flowers could be made from a given number of flowers. We wouldn't chop up the 4 remaining flowers, it wouldn't make sense. If we were solving how many kilometres a bus traveled each day, we could show a decimal amount (or a part of another metre) as a distance. Our division equation would show a decimal remainder.
Your task this week is to practice some division equations. Make up 2 of your own worded division problems (just like our division QR code). Write the stories or problems in your Homework book and show the correct setting out to actually solve each of them. Use your logic to see if it would be better to show any remainders as 'R...' or as a decimal.
LITERATURE CIRCLES
If you returned your Literature Circles book today, you have also borrowed another. Those people who did not bring it back today, please remember on Monday so that you have enough time to read the first third of the book by Friday. Each person must complete a 'role' (Eg. Discussion Director, Connector, Illustrator, etc.) by making notes on the sheet provided. This week you may choose which role you complete. Win at the Fair, Literature Circles, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 31st August
WIN AT THE FAIR - MATHS
In Maths we have been learning that games of chance can be manipulated to make it more likely to win or lose. (This is a good topic for pointing out the negative effects of gambling!) We have played a game called 'Win at the Fair', which we discovered at school is currently set to make it more likely for the customer to win and the stall holder to lose money. To play, the customer at the fair, pays $1. By rolling 2 x 6 sided dice and moving in the direction of the arrows on the game board, the game or turn is finished when the player reaches a hexagon with a money amount inside it. The customer either wins more, less or the same amount as the $1 they paid to play. The game board can be found on Google Classroom. With the large amount of data collected by recording all of our results together, we found that the stall holder would in fact, lose money. We have posed the question of whether or not the game can be altered to switch the likelihood of the result. Can you make a change to the game with either the dice numbers and direction arrows, the placement of the money amounts or the money amounts themselves? Remember, customers would still want to be enticed to pay $1 in the first place to play. Have a go at making a change to the game, play it with your family and be prepared to share your ideas and results on Friday.
LITERATURE CIRCLES
Please now go ahead and read to the end of your Literature Circles book. Each person must complete their 'role' (Eg. Remember to use post-it notes to mark pages as you read because this will be helpful to refer to with your group during the discussion. Once again, be ready to share your excitement of your book with your group. Reading of your Literature Circles books counts for Home Reading minutes.
HOME READING
As per usual, this week you are expected to complete a total of 120 minutes of reading and record it in your Homework book. Please remember to ask your parent or guardian to sign your book. Remember that reading your Literature Circles book counts towards Home Reading minutes.
SPELLING
Our spelling pattern this week is looking at the digraph /ss/ making the sound 's' as in 'dress'. Each day we will explore the words with a different activity. You can practise writing the words at home in your Homework book. We will have a spelling test for these words on Friday.
Discussion Director, Connector, Illustrator, etc.) by making notes on the sheet provided, which you were asked to glue into your Homework book. Inquiry, Literature Circles, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 24th August
INQUIRY
We have been working hard on our inquiry projects, including some of us having the opportunity to design and print with the 3D printer. (Everyone will have an opportunity to use the 3D printers this year.) By the end of the week, your project should be finished and ready for display and feedback. This includes your finished model of either a solar panel car, a windmill, a worm farm or a biodiversity diorama. For those constructing the worm farm or diorama, you will need to have written information with your project, as discussed in class. The writing will explain how the worm farm works and interesting facts that you have researched. Your diorama is expected to have labelled number parts and each number will correspond to written information about what happens at that point. You will have your final class time on Tuesday afternoon, then it will be homework to finish it. Use your class time wisely!
LITERATURE CIRCLES
You are now able to read the second third of your Literature Circles book. The page numbers to stop at can be found in Google Classroom. Each person must complete their 'role' (Eg. Discussion Director, Connector, Illustrator, etc.) by making notes on the sheet provided, which you were asked to glue into your Homework book. Powerful Sentences, Literature Circles, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 17th August
POWERFUL SENTENCES
We have been working hard on being the best writers we can be and as part of this learning, we have been experimenting with the way we create sentences. There are different types of sentences - simple, compound and complex. Simple sentences can be very powerful with the drama or emphasis they create. Complex sentences can help to create a clear image in the reader's head with the detail they include. Sentences can include independent and dependent clauses, conjunctions and adjective phrases. Remember that on Google Classroom, there are two reference sheets if you need a refresher for what they are - 'Sentence Types' and 'Clauses and Conjunctions'. Your homework task this week is to have a go at creating different sentences, just like we have been practicing at school. Here is an example like we did in class:
1. He hit the ball.
(Simple sentence with one independent clause)
2. He hit the ball against the wall and it slammed back at him.
(Compound sentence with independent clauses, a dependent clause and a conjunction)
3. He carefully and accurately hit the ball against the wall and it slammed back at him.
(Complex sentence with independent clauses, a dependent clause, a conjunction and an adjective phrase)
In your Homework book, write a simple, compound and complex sentence for each topic as set out above (which we will call a 'set of 3 sentences'). You don't need to write what is in italics each time, just 3 clear sentences for each topic. Start a new line for each sentence. Try the following topics:
Topic 1:
Fish
Topic 2:
Tree
If you would like to choose your own topic instead, you are welcome to. Choose your best 'set of 3 sentences' to carefully write in your best handwriting to go on display at school. Remember, to be seen on display, your writing will need to be large enough to be seen by others (your audience shouldn't need a magnifying glass to be able to read it). You can ask your teacher for display paper if you would like to use some from school.
LITERATURE CIRCLES
Well done to everyone for your great contributions to discussions about our Literature Circles book this week. You now have a brand new Literature Circles book which you have 3 weeks to read. If you haven't yet returned your previous book, please do so as soon as possible so that you can get your next book. On Monday you will be allocated a role. You can all be reading now. Each person must complete their 'role' (Eg. Discussion Director, Connector, Illustrator, etc.) by making notes on the sheet provided, which you were asked to glue into your Homework book. MULTIPLICATION TABLES
We are still aiming for everyone to be confident to automatically recall all multiplication tables to 10x10. Our Blitz Master results are showing that everyone is improving. Let's keep it up! Keep practising your tables in any way that works for you. For instance, ask another family member to fire questions at you; roll 2 dice and multiply the numbers; or make a grid with numbers 1-10 in random order horizontally and vertically and time yourself to answer all of them. If you already know all of these, work on the split strategy of multiplying two digit numbers quickly in your head. For example, 26 x 5 can be thought of as 20 x 5 + 6 x 5.
HOME READING
As per usual, this week you are expected to complete a total of 120 minutes of reading and record it in your Homework book. Please remember to ask your parent or guardian to sign your book.

Essential Assessment, Poetry, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 15th June
ESSENTIAL ASSESSMENT
Next week we will be doing some activities relating to 'Area' in Maths. In 'Essential Assessment' a pre-test has been set to explore what you know about this topic. You may find some of the questions tricky, so you may need to do some research or talk with mum and dad to learn a bit more. Make sure you know your username or password. The school code is: TPPS3106.
POETRY
In Grade 5 and 6 we are studying poetry by visiting a different grade 5 or 6 teacher each week. So far, we have had 2 poetry rotations. Choose one of these poems to publish at home. Once you have checked your work to make it the very best it can be, ask Mum or Dad to be your final conference partner so that it is completely correct (spelling and punctuation) before you copy your draft for final publishing. This piece can be handwritten or computer generated. It's your choice. If you would like special coloured paper to present your poem, please ask your teacher. Your poem must be an A4 size to fit into your Writers' Gift folder.
HOME READING
Once again, this term you are expected to complete a total of 120 minutes of reading and record it in your Homework book. Please remember to ask your parent or guardian to sign your book.
SPELLING
Our spelling words this week are learning about the digraph /st/ making the sound ‘s’ as in 'castle'. Each day we will explore the words with a different activity. Your child can practise writing their words at home in their Homework book. We will have a spelling test for these words on Friday afternoon.

- alternative energy sources
- landfill
- waterways - Your poster must include:
* main heading
* describe facts and information organised by sub-headings
* pictures or diagrams
* a list of websites or books you use for extra research - Remember to write things in your own words, don’t just copy slabs of information. Use the information you learned at CERES.

Game and Movie Ratings, Home Reading and Spelling Due: Friday 25th May
GAME AND MOVIE RATINGS
At school we have been discussing our behaviour and how we may be influenced. Your homework task this week is to look at what you are watching and the games you are playing to see if they play a role in how you choose to behave. For this task, you may present the following information in any format you like. You may like to write and/or draw in your Homework book, or you may prefer to make a poster. You may choose to use an app on your iPad to present your information, instead. You will be sharing your results with the class on Friday. All of the following parts need to be completed.
Requirements:
1. List your top 10 favourite movies / TV shows / X-box games / Play Station games / iPad apps.
(You may choose to do more than 10. You can have a combination of any of these categories.)
2. What rating (censorship) does each have? For instance, do they have a 'PG' rating or are they recommended for a certain age level?)
3. What does each rating mean?
4. Why do you think that particular show or movie or game has been given that rating?
5. What are the positive and negative effects of these shows / movies / games? How do you think these impact on the way you interact with other people?

Inquiry Flow Chart and Home Reading Due: Friday 18th May
This week coming we have our NAPLAN assessments. Please keep up with your Home Reading requirements. The only other task to complete is the good copy of your flow chart showing how food is produced. You have been working on this in class and everyone has started their good copy on an A3 sheet which you were asked to take home in a plastic pocket. Please demonstrate pride in your presentation by using colour and texta or fine-liner to outline each part. Remember to include a label for each picture. Your work needs to be of a high presentation standard to be displayed.

Fractions, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 11th May
It was excellent to see the improvement in each student's ability to accurately recall multiplication tables. Well done to everyone who has worked hard to memorise the facts. This mathematics will be used for the rest of your life! Students have taken a photo of their 'February' and 'May' results today and have saved them in their Google Portfolios. Please take some time to share your success with your family.
FRACTIONS
We have been working hard at adding fractions for the last couple of weeks. One way to know if you fully understand something is to be able to teach it to somebody else. For homework this week, please explain how you solve the following equations. Please use your iPad to record your teaching. The best apps to do this with are 'Show Me' or 'Explain Everything'. These work well, because you can write as if you have a whiteboard and speak at the same time, explaining what you are doing and why. If you do not have either of these, simply using the video function on your camera will be fine too.
How do you solve the following equations?
1. 1/5 + 3/5 (fractions with the same denominator)
2. 1/4 + 3/8 (related fractions)
Optional:
3. 1/3 + 2/5 (unrelated fractions)
HOME READING

SPELLING
This week in spelling we are revising homophones - words that sound the same, but have a different spelling and meaning. Each day we will explore the words with a different activity. Your child can practise writing their words at home in their Homework book. Can you think of some ways to help you remember which word is which? We will have a spelling test for these words on Friday afternoon.

Transformation of Shapes, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 4th May
It was excellent to see the variety of ways in which students chose to show what they had discovered about their family's energy use last week. Many students were keen to share what they had learnt and quite a few have also started to plan with their family to make some minor adjustments to reduce the amount of energy they are using.
TRANSFORMATION OF SHAPES
In Maths we have been exploring the transformation or movement of shapes. We have been talking about ways to move shapes on a plane and the mathematical terms for these movements. For example, you can 'translate' a shape or slide it horizontally or vertically; you can 'reflect' it or flip it; and it can also be 'rotated' or turned. We posed the following real-life example to the students for them to explore the design and movement of their own shape:
A wrapping paper company wants to make some new designs and they employ an artist to ‘keep it simple by using the same shape and use symmetry too’. As the artist employed, using translations, reflections and rotations, what designs could you make? Your shape must have a line of symmetry.
In class, students have decided on their shape and have explored different ways of moving it. For homework, their wrapping paper design needs to be completed. This means that the shape must appear a minimum of 8 times on the page. There must be examples of all 3 movements - translation, reflection and rotation. It needs to be coloured carefully with pride as our designs will all be going up on display.

Government Reflection and Electricity Investigation Due: Friday 27th April
GOVERNMENT REFLECTION
To become independent learners and be the best that we can be, it is important to think or reflect on how we are going with our learning. We need to stop and think about what we have understood, the effort we have put into our work, the skills we have developed and what goals we have for future learning.
In class today we began reflecting on our learning from our Government unit. In our Google Portfolio - Inquiry Folder- we set up a new Google Doc named 'Government Reflection'. There are 4 questions to answer. We expect a minimum of one paragraph per question. The answers need to be finished by Friday 27th April.
1. What did you learn from this unit of work?
2. What did you find particularly interesting and why?
3. Which learning assets did you work on? (Collaborator, Self-Manager, Thinker, Communicator, Researcher)
4. How can you improve your learning in our next unit?
Shortly, your teacher will be saving your assessment rubric for the Government unit into your Inquiry folder. Please read the criteria in each section carefully to see what you can work on next time. Your teacher is happy to talk to you about your marks if you wish.
ELECTRICITY
We are starting a unit about sustainability this term. Your task this week is to have a conversation with your family about how your family uses energy such as electricity, gas and water. You may want to look at an electricity bill and have your parents explain what it shows. You may wish to make a list of all the ways you use electricity, for instance, hair dryer, toaster, lights, microwave, etc. Choose a way in which to show what you have learned. For example, you may wish to draw and label some pictures; you might like to write some paragraphs to summarise what you discovered; you may like to make a table to organise your information; or use an app on your iPad. These are just a few ideas of how you could show it. It is your choice. Record your work in either your Homework book or on your iPad.

Government Campaign Poster, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 23rd March
GOVERNMENT CAMPAIGN POSTER
As part of our Inquiry topic, 'How does Government work in Australia?' we are now learning about the process of voting. To make this as real as possible, students have chosen a topic that they could teach to all of Grade 5 next term as part of our 'Grade 5 Fun Activity' program. They are now creating a campaign to see if their club is one that is voted for by others. Google Classroom outlines the requirements of the Fun Activity which we have used at school. Some students have chosen to campaign as an 'Independent' candidate (by themselves), whilst others have formed a 'Party' and are campaigning to run the activity as a group (no more than 3 people). Google Classroom also shows a 'Government Voting Rubric'. Each student will create their own brochure, a speech, a poster and a multimedia advertisement.
For homework this week, ONLY the poster needs to be finished by Friday. Students will be given time in class on Wednesday and Thursday to make a start. We will be working on all aspects of our campaigns in class this week and next, then students will present their speech, ready to vote in the last week of term.
SPELLING

Government Inquiry, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 9th March
GOVERNMENT INQUIRY
In class we have been investigating our Inquiry topic, 'How does Government work in Australia?' As part of this investigation, we have learnt about Concept Maps and how they can show our thinking. We made our own concept map of the topic Government and what we knew at the start of the unit. A local government representative, Michelle Kleinert, Deputy Mayor of Manningham, has visited to talk to us about some of the roles and responsibilities of local government. Matthew Guy, the State Opposition leader has come to tell us about some of the roles and responsibilities of state government. We are beginning to understand how the different levels interact. As part of our inquiry we also all created our own questions - things that we do not understand and want to know more about.
For homework this week, you need to research answers to one or more of your ‘I Wonder’ questions about Government. This may be by reading information or through discussion with your parents. If you read articles for information, you can count this time towards your Home Reading minutes.
In your Homework book, write your question and on a separate line, start your answer. Your answer(s) can be in paragraphs or you could include labelled diagrams or pictures.
SPELLING
On Monday, your child will bring home a list of words that we will be working on in class. Each day we will explore the words with a different activity. These words will be the digraph /ou/ making the sound "u" as in young. Each day your child can practise writing their words at home on the sheet provided.
HOME READING
Our usual expectation of 120 minutes of reading needs to be completed and recorded in your Homework book. Please remember to ask your parent or guardian to sign your book.
GOVERNMENT INQUIRY
In class we have been investigating our Inquiry topic, 'How does Government work in Australia?' As part of this investigation, we have learnt about Concept Maps and how they can show our thinking. Multiplication Facts, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 2nd March
MULTIPLICATION FACTS
In class we have tested each other on how efficiently we know the multiplication facts from 1x1 through to 10x10. We marked our pages with coloured highlighters as follows:
Green = knew the correct answer correctly and automatically
Yellow = knew the correct answer but needed thinking time to get it
Pink = either didn't know or gave an incorrect answer
The students were asked to take a photo of their sheet on their iPad (so they can view it any time) and then glued their sheet into their Maths book which stays at school. Your task this week is to work hard at learning the multiplication facts. Remember, multiplication is commutative, which means the numbers can be multiplied in any order. If you know 4x7, then you know 7x4. If you find there is a particular number you are not strong on, work on that, a few equations at a time. When you have mastered those, add some more. Suggestions for learning include writing the counting pattern, for instance, 7, 14, 21, 28, etc. as well as trying to beat the clock. Roll some dice to create multiplication equation. Have fun and feel good mastering more of them this week!

Healthy Eating, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 23rd February
HEALTHY EATING
We have used our health diary to analyse our eating, sleeping and exercise routines. At school we have sorted the data into food group categories and tallied the results. We have then used this information to create column graphs for us to clearly see the food groups we eat the least and most of. For some of us, there were a few surprises of how much or little of each group we consumed over the week. Of course, special occasions such as birthday celebrations usually inflate our 'sweets' or 'sometimes foods'.
Your task this week is to research about the recommended quantities of each food group for your age. All research and reading for this counts towards your reading minutes. Some questions to consider are:

- How many serves of fruit are recommended?
- What about the amount of meat, fish or protein you should eat?
- What is a healthy amount of water to drink each day?
- How much sleep should someone your age be getting each night?
- How much exercise is a good amount?

Maths, Spelling and Home Reading Due: Friday 16th February
MATHS
Following on from our Maths work on Place Value, this week's homework is a game. Place Value means that the 'place' a digit sits will determine its' 'value'. For example, in the number 543, the 5 represents 500 as it sits in the hundreds column. In the number 73.5, the 5 represents 5 tenths as it sits in the tenths column. The game you need to play is 'WIPEOUT'. We have played this in class.
Instructions
1. Each player needs a calculator.
2. One person says a number that all players type into the calculator. The number must be at least 4 digits. Each digit needs to be different. eg. Starting number is 5468.
3. Players take turns to say a digit to be 'wiped out'. For example, the player says, "Wipe out the 4". Each player can only use subtraction to make the digit wipe out and be replaced by a zero. Eg. 5468 To wipe out the 4, each player would need to subtract 400. It would be recorded as:
5468 - 400 = 5068. Check with all players to see if you agree and reached the correct number. If your answers are different, can you work out why?
4. Each player takes a turn at selecting a number to 'wipe out' to zero. Each time, record in your book the subtraction equation that you performed. The goal is to 'wipe out' all digits so that a total of 0 remains.
5. Try to challenge yourself with your number range. Starting numbers could be anything from millions to thousandths. Play at least 3 games.
SPELLING
Teachers had a very successful day working on the new SMART spelling approach on Friday. Today we began introducing this approach. Tomorrow your child will bring home a list of words that we are working on in class. We have talked about 'graphs' (one letter which represents a sound) and 'digraphs' (2 letters which represent one sound). For example, the word 'cat' is spelled with 3 graphs - C, A and T. There are 3 sounds in cat which are made with 3 letters. The word 'beach' has 3 sounds: B/EA/CH. 'Beach' is spelled with one graph (B) and 2 digraphs, (EA) and (CH). This week we will be focusing on the digraph EA making an 'E' sound as in 'beach'. Students are required to practise writing their chosen numbers for a few minutes each day. We will be working on our words here at school.

Health Diary and Home Reading Due: Monday 12th February
Our health task is due on Monday 12th February (due to a Curriculum Day on Friday 9th). Each student has been given two A3 sheets which have been pasted into their Homework book. These sheets are a diary of our eating, sleeping and exercising routine for a week. As part of our Positive Education PERMAH model, we are learning that what we eat, as well as how much sleep and exercise we have can greatly affect our moods and our ability to concentrate. Each student is required to fill in the diary every day for the next week. If a column does not apply to you, such as 'supper', leave it blank. Drinks can be listed as the type of drink, such as 'water' or 'milk' and a tally recorded beside it for multiples of the same eg. water 6.
This diary is expected to be completed and returned to school on Monday 12th February. We will be analyzing the data in class and using it for some of our Maths lessons.
Please remember to read for a total of 120 minutes for next week. Details about the type of material that can be included may be found in the Guidelines below. Record your reading in your Homework book.

Homework Guidelines for Grade 5
Weekly homework is now being set. Every student has been allocated a Homework book. This book is to be used for set tasks each week unless a task requires their iPad to be used instead. Parents are requested to sign that their child has completed the required amount of reading each week as well as the set tasks in their homework book. The students will be responsible for recording their home reading in their Homework book.
The homework books have all been set up with the students at school so that everyone knows the expectations. Weekly homework tasks will be uploaded to the Homework tab on our Grade 5 website. All students are required to have the Grade 5 website icon saved to their Home Screen on their iPad. Diaries are NOT being used this year. Instead we will be guiding the students to use Compass and set reminders to manage their time. Homework for Grade 5 will generally not exceed 25 - 35 minutes per school day. Homework will usually be set on Friday and will be due the following Friday. Occasionally a minor task will be due earlier in the week if we are using the information for a specific lesson in class. Having a full week to complete tasks allows families to work out when is the best time for them to allocate to homework. Our goal is to have self-motivated students who plan and organise their time to complete tasks in a timely manner by fine tuning their organisational skills. Some of them will need support and encouragement to set up regular routines at home. Please support them with encouraging a quiet place to work and talk with them about what they are learning about. It is so much easier for them when parents show an interest in what they are doing.
Reading
Every student is expected to read for 120 minutes per week. Find a 'good time' for reading in your house. It is a great daily habit to spend 15 or more minutes per night in bed just before going to sleep. For other families, after school or even in the morning, may be better. To get to the 120 minutes we ask that this should be spread over at least 4 separate times through the week, not in one long stretch, once a week. Research shows that the more students read a variety of material, the more brain connections they make and the easier learning becomes.
Reading minutes can be accumulated through a variety of the following activities:
- Daily reading a novel of their choice
- Reading a newspaper, magazine article of non-fiction book of their choice
- Reading an appropriate eBook
- Reading and practice of spelling or common words
- Research for a class project or investigation - this may include note taking and responses
- Reading and/or responding to a Literature Circles book
- Reading Eggspress
Each week students will be required to complete some Mathematics and Spelling/Grammar based on what we are learning in class.
